Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 349 - Swing Keel Freedom

If you are comparing Sun Odyssey 349s, this is the one that opens up more of the Australian coastline. The swing (lifting) keel gives you genuine cruising performance with the freedom to slip into shallow bays, estuaries and sand-bottom anchorages that fixed-keel boats simply cannot reach. You get the best of both worlds - Proper offshore-capable sailing when the keel is down, and shoal-draft versatility when it is raised.

Designed by Marc Lombard, the 349 has a well-earned reputation as one of the smartest 34-foot cruisers afloat. The hard chine hull adds stability and power, while the twin rudders deliver control and balance, especially when the boat is heeled. The cockpit is laid out so she is easy to sail short-handed, yet still feels open and social at anchor. Twin wheels, a wide cockpit and a drop-down swim platform turn the stern into your own private beach once you are anchored, making life on board relaxed and inviting.

On deck, all the key control lines are led aft so you can reef, trim and tack without leaving the cockpit, which is ideal for a couple or small family. With the keel fully lowered she tracks well and feels stiff and reassuring upwind. With the keel raised, you can comfortably explore rivers, bar crossings and tucked-away anchorages where many other 34-footers will not go. It is a genuinely practical feature that meaningfully expands where and how you can use the boat.

Down below, the Sun Odyssey 349 offers impressive volume for a 34-footer and a layout that works for real cruising, not just weekend showings. The saloon is bright, with good headroom and large hull windows. The L-shaped galley provides proper bench space and storage, so cooking on board is practical rather than a compromise. The cabins have proper double berths rather than "kids only" bunks, there is a sensible navigation area, and the head is large enough to shower and get changed without a struggle. The interior finish is classic modern Jeanneau, with warm timber tones, clean lines and plenty of natural light.

This is not a stripped-out ex-race boat or a tired charter workhorse. It is an honest, modern cruising yacht set up to be used and enjoyed. If you are looking for a Sun Odyssey 349 that combines real sailing performance, comfortable accommodation and the freedom of a swing keel to explore more of Australia's waterways, this one deserves a serious look.
