Boston Whaler 350 Outrage Review
When I was asked to travel to the beautiful Whitsundays to test a Boston Whaler 350 Outrage, I just knew I was in for a treat! I returned from the adventure crowing that driving the Boston Whaler 350 Outrage was one of the greatest experiences of my long life in boating.
In my mind, the Boston Whaler 350 Outrage is the ultimate big boy's toy - and it's hard to argue otherwise. This 35-footer is a true nautical beast, with its rugged hull, breathtaking aesthetics, superb design, premium ergonomics and a sports fishing layout that's hard to beat. Three 350HP Mercury Verados deliver insane power, and Raymarine electronics guide the way - and back again safely.
Boston Whaler's Strong Reputation

Boston Whaler's reputation for building indestructible boats precedes it, and this Outrage is no exception. Boston Whaler are legendary for building boats that are tough and ultimately seaworthy, at the same time leaving the occupants safe, comfortable and content thanks to their construction quality incorporating innovative foam flotation tech. Who can ever forget the promotion where they cut a hull in half on the water, and the segments kept floating as if unperturbed? Hence, the brand has dominated the US market for decades, and the 350 Outrage is just the latest proof of the pudding.
These big outboard-powered boats used to be the domain of the rich and famous offshore racers, and yes, perhaps a few drug runners. But now, with modern tech, they're a blast for anyone who wants to have fun on the water, especially with a fishy offshore DNA - and that's what it's all about. In short, the 350 Outrage is one outrageously sensational water sports weapon capable of long offshore sojourns.
With no sleeping quarters, it's all about the day's adventure - fishing, cruising, or just enjoying the ride. If you need a place to crash, perhaps look to their 37-footer, but the 350 Outrage is all about living in the moment.
The efficiencies of our latest technology have delivered big multi-engine rigs that offer a suitable alternative to inboards, shafts, and legs. But boats of this nature aren't just about making sense; in fact, they’re more about creating fun-filled "nonsense"! Boston Whaler says, "Every element combines to produce an exceptional experience no matter what the day brings. On a Whaler, you are safe, secure and always ready for more with confidence that never wavers."
So, Who Buying One?

It’s certainly not just a pure fishing or dive boat; in fact, it's quite the opposite. Andrew Bennett from Queensland Marine Centre, the Australian distributor for Boston Whaler tells me that perhaps only 30 per cent of his customers are dedicated offshore fisho's, and that the bulk are made up of experienced, multi-purpose boaties who aren't necessarily looking for floating gin palaces, but instead want big, fast, comfortable and sporty machines, and some large commuters. I love the idea of a thirty-five-foot hull with absolutely no sleeping quarters. It speaks volumes about the attitude of the boat. Have a great day on the water, no matter your interest, and go to the comfort of the mother ship, motel or home mooring at night.
She's a very comfortable boat, physically, aesthetically and practically.
The 350 Outrage has some seriously clever design touches. Up front, the anchor is tucked away in its own moulding, and there's a full chain winch in a neat compartment. Pop-up cleats and recessed grab rails keep things tidy, and the forward lounge converts to a casting platform, or doubles as a sun lounge.
Wow, What A Centre Console

The centre console is a real highlight, with a double sun lounge in front and a tilting top that reveals a massive storage area. You can stash an inflatable, fishing gear, SCUBA tanks, and much more underneath, or insert the plug-in table for entertaining. Boston Whaler's clever approach to integrating the console and T-top module creates a seamless and strong design. Underneath, the enclosed head is a real bonus, with a VacuFlush toilet, vanity, and shower. It's one of the biggest and best-appointed bathrooms in its class, and the faux-timber cabinetry and Flexiteak flooring add a touch of class. The ladies will love it, and it's definitely no compromise on comfort. Up top, the T-top roof provides plenty of shade and a solid mounting point for gear like radar and outriggers. You may wish to use the T-top roof to secure life rafts or water toys; alternatively, it can even be used as a base for a tuna tower if you're a serious game fisherman.

The helm is a ripper! The stainless steel steering wheel is centrally mounted with room for a passenger on either side, and all protected from the wind and spray when driving hard out to those marlin grounds. I have been critical of many centre consoles that leave the driver and first passenger extremely exposed, yet the Boston Whaler has a large, slightly curved and tinted safety glass windscreen with wiper/washer out front, and small side windows which do give the operator some real protection as well as panoramic vision. The top of the dash is huge, however, I would personally add some custom trays, perhaps out of teak, for retaining all of the knick-knacks; otherwise, you'll have to have very long arms to pick up items that will inevitably roll forward.

The skipper is treated to a top-notch dash and control layout that's easy to use. The dual Raymarine GS165 displays with Quantum Radar and Evolution Autopilot are a highlight, giving you a crystal-clear picture of your surroundings and precise control. The Mercury VesselView7 is a great addition, providing precise engine diagnostics and many more diagnostic and navigation functions. The helm seat is comfortable, and the three bolster seats with full backrests are a class act. The Flexiteak floor and footrest mouldings add a touch of luxury, and the optional "Summer Kitchen" is a game-changer. You can catch, cook, and enjoy your dinner in style with a pressurised live bait well, sink, and electric grill. And let's not forget the cabinetry and fridge space for all your gear and goodies.

The Boston Whaler 350 Outrage got its priorities straight. Unlike some American boats that sacrifice functionality for flashy mouldings, this one's designed for fishing, cruising and long-range versatility. You've got heaps of deck room, a non-skid finish, and good combing height for safety. The layout is very clever, with its plumbed live bait tank, recessed rear folding lounge, and folding side seat, all adding to the versatility and function. There's a rear door and an optional dive door with a ladder, making it perfect for both fishing and diving excursions.
There are kill tanks concealed under each side of the deck. In the middle we find another large compartment housing all of the batteries (6 in total) with switch gear and immediate access to the bilge pumps, fuel filters, sea cock, thru-hull transducers. There’s even the concealed storage rack for the pull-out table and plenty more storage for ropes, oils and other bric-a-brac. The superb cockpit is beautifully laid out and neatly finished with thick padded combings, making that long fight on a large, thrashing pelagic much more comfortable.
Get Up and Go - Feel The Power!

There’s no shortage of power and performance in this gutsy Outrage – in fact it feels simply sensational on the water. The triple Mercury Verado 350HP Four-Stroke stormtroopers look like they were moulded to the sleek lines and stunning aesthetics of the hull. Adorned in their icy cladding, the three white knights punched out the horsies in a gutsy performance mounted comfortably across the full-width engine well of the 350 Outrage.
This Boston Whaler is a real surprise package! It produces a ridiculously smooth ride, even in choppy conditions. The big Verados are expertly tuned, and the hull glides through the water with barely a whisper. It's like a magic carpet ride, with low noise levels and precision handling. You'd never guess how fast you're going; trust me, the speedos and instruments will have you double-taking the numbers.
She jumps out of the hole effortlessly and quickly sets a terrific running attitude with just a slight bow rise, even without adjusting the trim tabs. She’s planning at around 3000RPM at 15.5 knots, possibly a bit less, but throttle up a little to 4000RPM and she provides comfortable and relatively economical fast cruising speed at 29 knots drinking 118 litres per hour, which isn’t bad considering the weight, size and horsepower let alone the four passengers and 600 litres of fuel we were carrying at the time. With every increased rev, the engine/hull combination felt better and better until we reached a thrilling but not sensibly sustainable Wide Open Throttle of 48 knots at 6000rpm, drinking 348lph and returning 0.25km/l. It mightn’t be sensible, but by God, it was fun!!!

Verado 350's From Mercury
I laughed out loud when I went to the Mercury web page to confirm some specifications on the 350 Verado’s, and the first heading I find says “Intelligence meets Testosterone!” Then I find “Outrageous Power – Refined Experience!” How fitting I thought, the entire boat and engine test could be summarised by these few chosen words and a couple of images.
These Mercury Verado 350HP's are simply beasts - 2.6 litre, supercharged, and fuel-injected power! With electronic boost pressure control and SmartCraft digital diagnostics, they're not just powerful; they're also clever. The belt-driven alternator and electro-hydraulic power steering make them a joy to handle, and the Warm Fusion White colour scheme looks sweet. They feature an inline six-cylinder format, producing 350 horsepower each with precision and finesse.

The recommended rev range is 5800-6400, so the fit-up combination of level, height and propeller choice (3 x Mercury 20” Revolution 4 Stainless Steel 4 blade) seemed very good considering some bumpy conditions with four persons on board and 600 litres of fuel. We hit 6000 RPM WOT and as they were quite new engines and I would expect a further few hundred revs once run-in.
Mercury has utilised a cold-air intake system that is designed to capture cool, fresh air from outside the cowl and deliver it directly and efficiently to the supercharger. A unique labyrinth design in the top cowl keeps the powerhead dry. The inline six-cylinder design suits multiple engine fit-ups, such as on the Boston Whaler, with reduced width from the streamlined cowlings. The 350 Verados are relative lightweights in their class at 303 kg each, and their power-to-weight combination felt exceptionally pleasing on this well-tuned Outrage.
The new Flo-Torq SSR HD propeller hub system makes a big difference - it seriously reduces the gearshift clunk you'd typically expect from the Mercury Offshore gearcase. Mercury is calling it the quietest and smoothest hub system ever, and it's hard to argue. Even without a joystick, the shifts are silky smooth, making it a breeze to handle the boat in tight spots like marinas.

The Verdict
Boston Whaler has a long reputation as an exceptionally safe and seaworthy hull. Combine this with the exhilarating performance of three 350 Verados, the extreme visual appeal, moulded quality, features, accessories, and layout, and you’ve got a fast, exceptionally capable, and comfortable offshore sensation—or a party animal!
Seriously, driving the Boston Whaler 350 Outrage in the Whitsundays was pure bliss! With the triple 350 Verados roaring beneath me, cruising through the crystal-clear waters with Hamilton Island and Whitehaven Beach on the horizon... it was one of those experiences that'll stay with me forever. Don't overthink it; get out there and enjoy the ride!
